File photoBERLIN, July 23 Ukrainian diplomat Oleksiy Makeev will succeed Andriy Melnyk as Ukraine's ambassador to Germany, the German television channel RTL reported, citing its own sources. According to its sources, the German Foreign Ministry will be officially notified of this in two weeks.

In July, Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree on the dismissal of Andriy Melnik, Ambassador to Germany, a number of statements which had previously caused a resonance. In particular, in the spring, Melnyk compared German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to «offended liver sausage» (he later expressed regret over these words), and in June he was criticized because of statements about Ukrainian nationalist leader Stepan Bandera. Melnik in one of his interviews called Bandera, an accomplice of the Nazis, a «freedom fighter» to whom laws are not written, and also denied his involvement in the killings of the Polish population. The German Foreign Ministry took note of Melnyk's statements about Bandera, but considers them as a personal statement, and not the position of the Ukrainian government, as spokesman Christian Wagner told reporters.
