In Yaroslavl, a 29-year-old former prisoner of IK-1, Yevgeny Makarov, who was one of the first to talk about torture in the colony, died of pneumonia. This was reported by the Public Verdict Foundation.

As Makarov's mother, Tatyana Shishova, told We Can Explain, her son could not be provided with quality medical care in three hospitals. Makarov had a blood clot in his blood vessels, which arose as a result of beatings in the colony.

“From the age of 19 to 25, the young man saw nothing but the zone, prison ways and an endless series of violence: crimes now by the “correcters” towards convicted offenders. Makarov bore the blame for the crime he committed, but in his short life he managed to do the main thing — not only to withstand the entire criminal process, but also to prove in his own deeds that torture in prisons is not just there, ”the Public Verdict stressed.

Makarov was released in 2018, after which he was assigned three years of administrative supervision. In 2021, he was arrested for stealing two bicycles.

In 2017, 15 employees of IK-1, on behalf of their superiors, beat Makarov with a rubber truncheon and fists. According to human rights activists, he received 865 blows to his legs, heels and back. Torture was recorded on a service video recorder to report on «educational activities.»

A ten-minute video of Makarov's beatings was published by Novaya Gazeta and Public Verdict. After that, the Investigative Committee began an investigation into torture in IK-1. 14 people were accused.

In 2019, the former deputy head of the operational department of IK-1 Sergey Efremov, who admitted his guilt, received four years in prison. In 2020, the court sentenced 11 people to real terms in the case of beating Makarov. Seven of them were released immediately after the trial, five more remained in custody. Acting head of IK-1 Dmitry Nikolaev and his deputy Igit Mikhailov were acquitted.
