MOSCOW, Jul 29 Hockey Canada spent 8, $9 million in sexual assault claims since 1989, CBC reports. This was stated by the leadership of the organization during a meeting of a committee of the House of Commons. Funds were paid to 21 people. Hockey Canada has paid $7.6 million in damages across nine lawsuits. Of these, 6.8 million were used to pay out in the case of children's coach Graham James, who was convicted of sexually assaulting young hockey players. Another 1.3 million was paid as a settlement of sexual harassment claims from a special fund. «The companies were not going to insure us for such cases. We did not use the money to protect our image. We paid to respond and support the victims and their families,» — said the CEO of Hockey Canada Scott Smith. The head noted that the organization will no longer use the fund.
