According to the ministry, Spain's High Council for Scientific Research was hacked on July 16 and 17, but the break-in attempts were discovered only on 18 July. The attack was carried out using ransomware. «There is no final report on the investigation yet, experts say that the origin of the hacker attack is Russian,» the ministry said in a statement. No classified information was lost or intercepted as a result of the attack. The involved security protocol led to the disconnection of access to the Internet in various centers of the council, which brings together Spanish state organizations in the field of applied and fundamental research. The Russian authorities have repeatedly denied involvement in cyber attacks and hacker activities, and also expressed their readiness to cooperate in the fight against hackers and conduct a dialogue on cyber security. In April, the Russian Foreign Ministry called US accusations of cyber attacks by Russia as another propaganda from the Joe Biden administration, aimed «by discrediting the Russian Federation and its policy of strengthening international information security to cover up the unleashed cyber aggression.»
