MOSCOW, Aug 15 Two-time Formula 1 champion and two-time winner Indianapolis 500 race Emerson Fittipaldi is running for the Italian Senate, according to Il Giornale. Fittipaldi will run in the country's Senate elections in the South American constituency for the right-wing Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy). The 75-year-old ex-pilot made the decision after talking with party leader George Meloni last Thursday. Fittipaldi also received support from Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. As noted, the Brazilian, whose father is Italian, and whose mother Yuzi Wojciechowska is from St. Petersburg, if elected senator, intends to implement a «well-structured project in the field of sports.» Fittipaldi also advocates for a number of citizenship law initiatives. «I am very pleased to run for the Italian Senate in the elections on September 25. I have already outlined several proposals, and all of them are related to the Brazilians, who have close ties to Italy, its culture and sports. I hope to win the support of the voters of Brazil and Latin America, as well as those who live in Italy and the Italians, who have always been my supporters,» Fittipaldi said. Fittipaldi is a Formula 1 champion with the Lotus teams (1972) and McLaren (1974), CART series champion (1989), winner of the Indy 500 in 1989 and 1993.
