In the fall of 2014, the DPR army began liberating the Donetsk airport, not far from which the monastery is located. It was then that the monastery and the cemetery came under artillery fire (from the side of the new airport terminal, which at that time was controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine), including incendiary shells. The cemetery was especially damaged.
