MOSCOW, September 2 The leadership of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) held a meeting with Association of European Leagues (Hockey Europe) and national member associations of the organization to discuss the possibility of organizing the World Cup in 2024, according to the IIHF website. Earlier, the National Hockey League (NHL) announced that it was considering the possibility of hosting the World Cup in 2024. Tournament matches are expected to be played in North America and Europe with eight national teams.» While nothing has been agreed on the structure and dates of the event, as well as participating teams, this was a briefing to understand from the NHL and the league union what their initial plans for the World Cup. The goal of the IIHF is to develop an international calendar that will be convenient for all associations, which can guarantee the possibility of holding the competition for a wider audience,» said IIHF head Luc Tardif. «If the World Cup is organized, we believe that this should be done in close cooperation and partnership between all relevant stakeholders and with clear long-term goals for the development of the game, while the current negotiations are focused mainly only on the World Cup. The last tournament took place in 2016, the Russian team reached the semi-finals, the Canadians won. The World Cups were also held in 1996 and 2004.
