Finnish hockey players urged to boycott the World Cup if the Russians are admitted


MOSCOW, Sep 18 Finnish journalist Riku Isokoski called on his national team to boycott Ice Hockey World Cup, if the Russian team is allowed to attend. On Friday, National Hockey League (NHL) Deputy Commissioner Bill Daley said he would like to find an option for Russian hockey players to take part in the World Cup. The NHL is considering hosting the tournament in 2024. Meetings are planned to be held in North America and Europe with the participation of eight teams. «If Russia's participation is officially confirmed, the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation should announce a boycott. Our country simply cannot participate in this «event.» Finland should do everything possible so that Russia does not got into the tournament. Money and level cannot be more important than morale and human values,» said Isokoski. President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Luc Tardif said earlier that the IIHF does not plan to allow the national teams of Russia and Belarus to international competitions in the upcoming season from for the situation in Ukraine. The World Cup is not held under the auspices of the IIHF, the last tournament took place in 2016, the Russian team reached the semi-finals, the Canadians won.
