Historian Yury Dmitriev was sent to a punishment cell in a Mordovian colony three times in a row

Employees of the Mordovian correctional colony No. 18 three times in September sent the historian, the head of the Karelian branch of Memorial, Yuri Dmitriev, to a punishment cell. This was reported by the Memorial Society.

“The first penalty was imposed on September 16 (three days in the ShIZO), the second — immediately after the first one — on September 19 (five days), the third, after a one-day respite, on September 26 five more days,” human rights activists write.

The reason for the penalties was that Dmitriev did not greet a representative of the administration in uniform, did not keep his hands behind his back when he was taken out, and left a cat on his bed, which he takes care of in the colony.

Criminal cases on the production of pornography and indecent acts were opened in 2016 due to nine photographs of Dmitriev's naked adopted daughter, in which she was three, four and six years old (Article 242.2, Part 1 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code).

According to the historian, he took the first four pictures at the request of his daughter, four more as a “health diary” for guardianship authorities — when the child had a pain in the groin, the last one — after she felt discomfort in the groin, riding a pony, Novaya Gazeta wrote.

Dmitriev was also accused of touching his adopted daughter's crotch several times (Parts 3 and 4 of Article 132 of the Criminal Code). He explained this by checking the dryness of the linen during bouts of incontinence in a child. Health problems were confirmed by a discharge letter from the hospital, Novaya Gazeta noted.

In addition, he was charged with possession of weapons because of a piece of the barrel from an old hunting rifle (Part 1 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code).

In 2018, the Petrozavodsk City Court acquitted the historian of all charges, except for possession of weapons — for this Dmitriev received 2.5 years freedom restrictions. A few months later, the acquittal was canceled, the historian was again sent to a pre-trial detention center — this time on a new case of violent actions.

In July 2020, Dmitriev was sentenced to 3.5 years in a strict regime colony on charges of violent actions, but acquitted for all other items. Two months later, the Supreme Court of Karelia extended the term to 13 years in prison. At the end of 2021, the sentence was also reviewed under other articles, increasing the total term to 15 years.
