A draft law on sending prisoners to war in Ukraine was submitted to the State Duma; deputies proposed to count one day in the combat zone as 10 days in the colony

Deputies of the Bashkir State Assembly submitted to the State Duma a bill on sending prisoners to war in Ukraine and their participation in other hostilities. Interfax reports this with reference to the press service of the lower house of parliament.

According to the bill, convicts will be able to receive a reprieve from punishment. In addition, the deputies proposed to consider one day in the war zone as ten days in a colony. If a prisoner is injured and unable to continue fighting, the court will decide whether to commute the sentence.

The speaker of the Bashkir parliament, Konstantin Tolkachev, specified that those who are serving sentences in disciplinary military units, in forced labor or in places of detention will be able to get a deferment from serving their sentences. According to the parliamentarian, convicts will be called up for the war in Ukraine “subject to their voluntary consent.”

Among the prisoners who will not be allowed to participate in hostilities in exchange for a reduced sentence, the deputies singled out people serving sentences for serious criminal offenses.

“By participating in hostilities in defense of the interests of the Russian Federation, the convict will be able to atone for his guilt before society and thus achieve the goals of criminal punishment,” Tolkachev noted.

Earlier, prisoners told Mediazona ”, that when they were recruited into the Wagner PMC to participate in the war, they were promised a pardon. As members of the HRC noted, at the moment the law does not provide for the release of a prisoner from punishment in this way.
