
MOSCOW, Oct 2 President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach expressed condolences to the relatives of those who died as a result of a stampede at a football stadium in Malang (Indonesia). The tragedy occurred on Sunday after the match between Arema and Persebaya football teams (2:3). Fans of the losing club ran onto the field. The police fired tear gas at the fans, causing panic and stampede. Indonesian authorities initially reported 174 deaths, but the death toll has since been reduced to 125 as some of the deaths were double-counted. IOC on Twitter. Earlier, Secretary General of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) Yunus Nusi said at a press conference that FIFA had requested a report on the tragedy.
