Archival photoMOSCOW, Oct 26The Historical and Toponymic Commission proposed to rename 164 streets in Odessa, whose names are associated with the Russian Federation and Belarus, the mayor's office said. «At the initiative of the Historical and Toponymic Commission, a working group was created from number of experts and developed an interactive map displaying all the streets to be renamed. An analysis of the names of more than 2,200 streets in Odessa was carried out in order to identify the need to rename them in accordance with the established criteria … A decision was made to rename 164 streets, «the message on the website of the Odessa City Hall says. In Lviv, Korolenko Street was renamed after a local nationalistIn particular, it is proposed to rename 50 streets whose names are identified with the names of Russian, Belarusian cities, historical and cultural objects, as well as 97 streets named after Russian military leaders. The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets, began in Ukraine in 2015, when a law on decommunization was adopted. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only with Soviet history, but with everything connected with Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has previously stated that the Ukrainian authorities have been pursuing a policy of aggressive de-Russification and forced assimilation for many years. He noted that Russia wants to see Ukraine as friendly, without a ban on the Russian language and Russian culture.
