UN, Dec 19 UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed the opinion that that the possibility of expanding the number of permanent members of the Security Council «is on the table.»
According to him, the issue of reforming the Security Council is in the jurisdiction of member countries, the UN Secretariat does not affect these negotiations.
«But I think that in During the General Assembly session in September, for the first time, I heard a clear signal from the US and Russia that they are in favor of expanding the number of permanent members of the Security Council.I think that there is now room for a much more serious discussion regarding the reform of the Security Council.I think that the possibility of The Security Council is seriously on the table,» Guterres said at a press conference.
According to him, France and Britain had previously made «a definite proposal» to limit the use of the veto in the Security Council. «But I remain pessimistic that (use of) the veto is seriously questioned,» he added.
