
MEXICO CITY, Dec 20 Mexican authorities granted asylum to the family of an ex- Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, she is at the Mexican Embassy in Lima, said Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
«They were granted asylum because they are on Mexican territory, in the embassy … Negotiations are now underway to allow them to leave safely so that they can have such an opportunity if they wish,» Ebrard said at a press conference broadcast by the government of the country in social networks.
Pedro Castillo, who served as president of Peru, on December 7 dissolved parliament, which was supposed to consider the issue of his impeachment for the third time. However, the parliamentarians still gathered for a meeting and decided on the resignation of Castillo. The armed forces and police spoke out against Castillo's decision, he was arrested on charges of rebellion, abuse of power. Previously Vice President Dina Boluarte was sworn in as head of state in Congress and became Peru's first woman president. Supporters of the ex-president are holding protests in which more than 20 people have already died.
Immediately after Castillo's detention, Mexico sent its consul to him, after which it announced that it had received an asylum application and started consultations with Peru. Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador at the same time publicly cited the interests of Peru's economic and political elite as the reason for the crisis and impeachment of Castillo and said that their opposition to Castillo since the inauguration was regrettable.
After these actions of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry of Peru recalled its ambassador to this country, as well as to Argentina, Bolivia and Colombia for consultations — the presidents of these countries also spoke out in support of Castillo.
