In Ukraine, a Crimean citizen Gennady Afanasyev, who was convicted in Russia in the case of «Crimean terrorists», died in the war. This is reported by Krym.Realii with reference to his wife, Lyudmila Afanasyeva.
Afanasiev was involved in the same case with Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov. According to investigators, they and several other people staged explosions and arson in the Crimea occupied by Russia.
In December 2014, Afanasyev was sentenced to seven years in a strict regime colony. In court, he said that he had slandered other defendants under torture and retracted his testimony. Memorial recognized Afanasyev as a political prisoner.
In June 2016, Afanasiev was exchanged for Odessa journalists, he returned to Ukraine.
