PARIS, Dec 22 Europe should get more autonomy from the US , including within NATO, said French President Emmanuel Macron in an interview with the Monde newspaper.
This is how the French leader commented on the opinion that the conflict in Ukraine revealed the EU's greater dependence on Washington.
«Europe must defend itself. Europe must receive technological autonomy from the United States, and European foothold in NATO. This is not an alternative project,” said Macron.
Contradictions between Europe and the United States arose after President Joe Biden signed a law in August that provides for an increase in tax subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles assembled in North America. The document, which the administration calls the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), contains a clause for $370 billion for clean energy and climate targets, and $64 billion for lowering the cost of medicines and health insurance.
A mass rally organized by a political party «Patriots», was held in Paris.
The EU called this act discrimination against goods imported from other countries.
Earlier, Macron openly expressed dissatisfaction with stimulus measures against American manufacturers. According to the French leader, the law is contrary to WTO norms and is unfriendly.
