The UN commented on the new package of US aid to Ukraine

UN Dec 21 UN would like to see peace in Ukraine in accordance with the Charter of the organization, said at a briefing the official representative of the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, in response to a request to comment on the allocation of a new package of US military assistance to Kyiv.
The United States is providing about $1.85 billion in additional military assistance to Ukraine, which includes the Patriot air defense system that Kyiv requested, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said earlier. According to the secretary of state, the massive package of military assistance to Kyiv includes «enhanced air defense and precision strike capabilities, as well as critical equipment that Ukraine uses on the battlefield.»

Dujarric was asked whether the UN Secretary General considers the new package of US military assistance to Kyiv, which includes Patriot missiles, as a legitimate defense of a sovereign state or an escalation.

«We would like to see peace in Ukraine within the framework of international law and the UN Charter. We have seen the escalation of this conflict, we have seen the suffering of an increasing number of people. We would like to see the end of the conflict within the parameters of the UN Charter,» Dujarric said.
As specified in the document of the State Department, 1 billion of assistance will be allocated to Kyiv through the diplomatic department, another 850 million — through the Pentagon. The announcement of massive new military aid to Ukraine coincided with a visit by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived in Washington on Wednesday to meet with US President Joe Biden and address both houses of Congress.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine, pointed out that Western countries that support the Kyiv regime are becoming a party to the conflict. He noted that any cargo that contains weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that pumping Ukraine with weapons from the West does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect.
