MOSCOW, 23 Dec. Readers of the newspaper Le Figaro are actively discussing the statement of French President Emmanuel Macron that Ukraine's entry into NATO will be a confrontational step towards Russia.
«Finally, words reminiscent of a compromise! Better late than never: there is hope that a third world war can be avoided. After all, Russia was given a word not to expand NATO. And then there were more agreements in the spirit of guarantees of its security. And this word or the signed contract must be fulfilled,” wrote one of the commentators.
«Couldn't Macron have said this a year earlier? Better yet, before that date, by persuading other Western leaders into a common promise not to expand NATO into Ukraine? This would save the whole world from an absurd and fratricidal armed conflict. Yes, and with the prospect of spreading all over the world!» supported another.
«The Ukrainian leader is trying to expand the war zone, draw other countries into it and drag out the conflict in time. And no one can reason with this Zelensky,» said a third.
“Wow! Self-criticism! Finally, Macron admitted that after everything that happened between Russia and the West, only the Chinese and Turks remain acceptable negotiating partners for Russians,” another user shared his opinion.
«Unfortunately, the United States will not ask and listen to Macron, so if they want, Ukraine will join NATO,» the reader concluded.
The day before, in an interview with Le Monde, Macron said that Ukraine's entry into NATO would be perceived by Russia as something confrontational, although he himself considers the scenario with Kyiv's admission to the alliance not the most probable. At the same time, Macron once again stressed that the architecture of security and stability in Europe should include security guarantees for Russia, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet republics.
Russia has been conducting a military special operation in Ukraine since February 24. Against this backdrop, the United States and its NATO allies continue to pump tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons into the Kyiv regime. Moscow, for its part, has repeatedly stated that the supply of Western weapons only prolongs the conflict, and the transport of weapons becomes a legitimate target for the Russian army.
