In Kemerovo, a fire in a private nursing home killed 20 people; authorities claim the shelter was illegal

In Kemerovo, a fire in a two-story building where a private nursing home was located killed 20 people. This was reported to TASS in the emergency services.

At least two more hospitalized with burns are known, who are in serious condition. The fire area was 180 square meters, it was extinguished by 80 rescuers and 28 pieces of equipment.

The signal about the fire, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, came to them at about 2:21 local time (22:21 Moscow time). The nursing home was heated with a stove, the misuse of which had previously caused the fire. The spread of fire was facilitated by wooden floors and foam insulation.

The building completely burned out the second floor, where the boarding house was located. According to TASS, 26 people were there at the time of the fire. Baza, citing one of the volunteers of the shelter, reports 27 guests and employees who spent the night in it at that moment. As Sibdepo writes, many of them were “refused” by their relatives. » alt=»1″ />ArticlePrison for old people. The police claim that the operation of the nursing home was illegal. The fire safety check was not carried out in it, since according to the documents it was an ordinary residential building. Kommersant reports that two weeks before the fire, inspectors from the Ministry of Emergency Situations tried to check the shelter, but they were not allowed inside.

Investigators found the owner of the building, who, according to TASS, rented out the premises. The alleged organizer of the nursing home, the pastor of the evangelical church Andrey Smirnov, was detained. In the fall of 2021, Sibdepo wrote that a former employee of the shelter accused him of “cruel treatment of the residents of the house.” According to the woman, Smirnov took away documents and bank cards from the guests, to which pensions come. She called the institution a «sect» and noted that it was unsanitary. The pastor, in response to this, “invited everyone to check the living conditions,” but then stopped communicating.

The Department of the Investigative Committee for the Kemerovo Region opened three criminal cases under articles about negligence, causing death negligent and rendering unsafe services. The head of the region, Sergei Tsivilev, promised to check “all institutions of this type” within a week.
