MOSCOW, Dec 24 British Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle reacted to the apology of the Sun newspaper for the publication of its columnist, TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson about the Duchess of Sussex, calling them a «PR stunt», reports the Independent newspaper, citing a spokesman for the spouses.
The Sun has previously apologized for Clarkson's post on Meghan Markle after the public outcry his article caused and numerous complaints about the post to the Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO).
“The fact that Sun did not contact the Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows her intentions. This is nothing more than a PR stunt. While the public certainly deserves an apology from the publication for their dangerous comments, we would not be in this situation if Sun had not «continued to profit and exploit hatred, violence and misogyny. A real apology would be a change in their coverage and ethical standards for everyone.»
Clarkson wrote in an article for The Sun that the Duchess of Sussex should be paraded through the streets naked and pelted with excrement, adding that all of his peers feel the same way. This comment caused a flurry of criticism in society, including among British parliamentarians. More than 60 British MPs demanded the Sun newspaper take drastic action against TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who wrote an offensive comment about Prince Harry's wife Meghan Markle in a column for the Sun. A Sun columnist on his Twitter account commented on his act, justifying it with an unfortunate reference to the Game of Thrones series, and asked the newspaper to remove the article.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the UK after a conflict with the royal family almost three years ago, refusing to perform royal duties. In March 2021, the couple gave a scandalous interview to Oprah Winfrey, in which they accused relatives of indifference, constant pressure, and even racism. Since then, relations between the couple and the royal court have remained tense.
