HELSINKI, Dec 28 Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas urged refugees from Ukraine to learn the state language so that a new community does not appear in the country that does not speak Estonian.
Prime Minister noted the importance of Estonian language courses for Ukrainian refugees, who must know the Estonian language at a minimum level.
«We do not want a new community in Estonia that does not speak Estonian. Even if they return, and 80% of the refugees say they want to return, why not have a group of people in Ukraine who speak Estonian? There is nothing wrong with that. That is the course we took from the very beginning,» Kallas said in her final interview with ETV+.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 118,000 Ukrainian refugees have entered Estonia since the end of February, of which more than 64,000 have remained in the country.
According to the head of government, now the refugees do not have enough housing, jobs and places in schools. «This is a big problem,» she stressed.
Kallas reminded that the Finnish authorities agreed to host some of the refugees who arrived in Estonia. «Still, the Finns have a much larger country and much more opportunities,» the prime minister added.
