UN Security Council urges Taliban to allow women to study at universities

UN Dec 27 UNSC concerned about Taliban (the Taliban movement* is under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) have suspended the education of female students at universities in Afghanistan, and calls for abandoning this policy, the Security Council said in a press statement.
Earlier, the Afghan media reported that the Ministry of Higher Education in the Taliban government ordered to suspend the education of female students in private and public universities in Afghanistan. The Minister of Higher Education of Afghanistan said that the education of girls in secular universities violates the laws of Islam and is contrary to Islamic traditions.

«The Security Council is deeply alarmed by reports that the Taliban have temporarily stopped admitting women and girls to universities, reiterated its deep concern over the closure of schools beyond the sixth grade, and called for the full equal … participation of women and girls in life in Afghanistan,» the statement said.

The UN Security Council called on the Taliban* to reopen schools and quickly abandon these policies and practices, which are the embodiment of a growing erosion of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms»,
In addition, the Security Council deeply is concerned about reports that the Taliban* have banned female NGO and international organization employees from going to work, «which will have significant and immediate consequences for humanitarian operations in the country.»
