BERLIN, Jan 2 Between environmental activists who blocked access to the village of Lützerath amid protests against coal mining and clashes with police on Monday, the portal of the German TV news program Tagesschau reported.
The German energy company RWE plans coal mining in Lützerath, southwest of Düsseldorf. According to the district resolution, the village must be completely liberated from the people living in it before the end of January. However, environmental activists protesting against mining want to keep Lutzerath and have settled in houses whose former residents have already moved.
The news portal notes that on Monday there were clashes between activists and the police. The activists threw firecrackers, bottles and stones at the police, the portal specified, citing a correspondent from the German news agency DPA from the scene.
It is specified that the activists set up barricades, one of the participants of the action glued himself to the access road, the other settled down on a high tripod. The protest was attended by activists from the movements Lützerath lebt («Lutzerath lives») and «Last Generation».
With reference to a police representative, it is noted that, if necessary, access roads will have to be cleared so that RWE can travel to Lützerath with its construction equipment.
The use of Lutzerat's resources is necessary in the winter to ensure a reliable supply of power plants in the midst of an energy crisis, according to the energy company.
