Vitamin B12 deficiency may lead to depression in the elderly

Irish scientists have found that vitamin B12 deficiency doubles the likelihood of developing depression in older people. The study was published in the prestigious British Journal of Nutrition.

B12 is important for the proper formation of red blood cells, the functioning of the nervous system and DNA synthesis. If a person does not get enough of this substance in food or supplements, then a number of unpleasant symptoms may develop: fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite and weight. Disorientation and memory impairment are also observed — up to dementia.

Older people are especially susceptible to a deficiency of this vitamin. This is due to the fact that with age, the body synthesizes less hydrochloric acid, which makes it difficult for the absorption of B12. In this regard, deficiency can also occur in people with gastrointestinal disorders such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.

The current study shows that B12 deficiency, if left untreated for 4 years, leads to depression in older people. The risk of developing the disorder is increased by 51%.

The scientists also tested whether vitamin B9, folic acid, has a similar effect. However, the deficiency of this substance did not affect the psychological state of patients. This vitamin also plays an important role in the formation and functioning of the nervous system.

Eggs will help to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency. This product contains many proteins and other valuable substances. One egg contains about 7% of the daily serving of B12. Milk will also come to the rescue: one cup of which can cover 18% of the vitamin requirement. Rich in substance and seafood, scientists also recommend beef liver.

B12 deficiency often occurs in vegetarians who do not consume animal products. They should monitor their vitamin levels and take supplements if they are deficient.

The most dangerous consequence of B12 deficiency is anemia. It can also develop with a deficiency of other B vitamins, including folic acid. It is believed that it is necessary to make up for the lack of vitamins as early as possible in order to avoid irreversible consequences for the body.
