MOSCOW, Jan 14 Ombudsman for Human Rights in Russia Tatyana Moskalkova called on the Ukrainian Ombudsman, the UN and the Red Cross to demand that the Kyiv authorities not use torture against prisoners. She announced this in her Telegram channel.
«I call on the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights, the UN Committee against Torture, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Committee of the Red Cross to immediately demand from the Ukrainian side observance of the Geneva Convention of 1949, which prohibits the use of torture, violence and acts that degrade the dignity of a person,» Moskalkova wrote.
According to the Ombudsman, the relatives of the captured Russian soldiers showed her footage showing the abuse of the latter.
«From unknown accounts, anonymous non-humans demonstrate to mothers bullying their sons and threaten to kill them if they do not receive a ransom. Another evidence for the future tribunal over the Nazis,» she stressed.
Moskalkova announced plans to appeal with this question to the chairman of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, and expressed the hope that, through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Defense and the FSB, «as has happened more than once, we will be able to return the guys.»
In early January, Russian soldiers who returned from of Ukrainian captivity, told investigators of the Investigative Committee about torture and humiliation — from beatings with feet and hands to the use of electric current and a rubber truncheon.
The Russian defense department, in turn, has repeatedly emphasized that captured Ukrainian soldiers are being all the requirements of the Geneva Convention concerning the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
