Important Stories studied the official statistics of the Prosecutor General's Office on crimes committed in Russia and found that every fifthmurderand every thirdrape in the country occurs within the family. Due to the war in Ukraine and the lack of rehabilitation programs for veterans, according to experts interviewed by the publication, their number may increase.
In 55% of cases, the victims of murders committed by family members or partners, including former ones, were women. Vladimir Kudryavtsev, an expert criminologist from the University of Florida, told Important Stories that these figures can be distorted
“When it comes to murder, everything is clear: there is a corpse — there is murder. And when we talk about an attempt, it is not very clear what kind of crime it is. Maybe someone brandished a knife. Maybe someone shouted to someone that he would kill him. There can be a variety of manipulations both on the part of law enforcement officers and on the part of the victims, ”he says.
The victims of officially recorded rapes that occur within the family are almost always — in 92% of cases — women. In 88% of these crimes, the victims were minors. As psychotherapist Ksenia Ivanova notes, these figures may also be underestimated.
“Most of the rapes that occur within families never reach the law enforcement agencies. People live for years hiding it. <…> If we had a law [on domestic violence] and people felt more secure, then they would go to law enforcement more often. Rubbish from the hut cannot be taken out, but the corpse is possible, ”she notes.
Criminologist Kudryavtsev also says that in Russia the police traditionally try to persuade them to take away the statements of victims of domestic violence who dared to come and tell them about it.
“In Russia, spousal violence is a category that they [the police] find difficult to imagine in principle. And even if the victims talk about this, the police try to dissuade them. They are sure that the victim will still take the application, and this will become a dangling thing for them, ”explains the expert.
Psychotherapist Ksenia Ivanova believes that due to the war in Ukraine, the number of cases of domestic violence in Russia will increase: “When there is a war, the level of aggression in society grows — in any society, not only in Russia.”< /p>
Criminologist Vladimir Kudryavtsev notes that no one in Russia has studied people who returned from the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. And Ivanova says the state does not organize PTSD rehabilitation programs. According to the psychotherapist, they will first of all throw out their aggression on their wives and children.
«I'm going to kill you bitch now.» Most women convicted of murder defended themselves against domestic violence
