Court in Latvia reduces sentence for journalist Alekseev

MOSCOW, January 30 The Riga District Court considered the complaint of journalist Yury Alekseev, who was sentenced in the fall of 2021 to one year and two months in prison, and decided to acquit him under the article on illegal possession of ammunition and reduce his sentence by a month, LETA reported on Monday, citing the court decision.
The Pardaugava Court of Riga in October 2021 sentenced Alekseev to a year and two months in prison after the Latvian prosecutor's office brought charges against him under three criminal articles. He was accused of inciting ethnic hatred, illegal possession of ammunition and distribution of child pornography. Alekseev denied all accusations and called them politically motivated. Within a month, he filed an appeal against the court's decision.
«Today the district court considered Alekseev's complaint against the verdict of the Pardaugava Court of Riga, which sentenced him to one year and two months in prison… Due to the absence of corpus delicti, the court ruled to acquit Alekseev on the charge of illegal acquisition and storage of cartridges to firearms. The defendant was found guilty of the rest of the charge, with a final sentence one month less than that indicated in the verdict of the court of first instance,» the report says.
