WASHINGTON, Jan 30 Rep. Marjorie, U.S. House of Representatives member Taylor Greene called the idea of the need for Ukraine to invade Crimea with US assistance «total insanity».
«Total madness! Now US warmongers say that in order to protect Ukraine, Kyiv must invade Crimea and take it from Russia. And all this with US leadership, funding, support, as well as military equipment, and of course, weapons «, the politician wrote on her Twitter page.
In January, the US announced its intention to send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. As stated in the White House, the United States hopes that the supply of weapons will not only help Kyiv in the defense, but also allow it to seize the lost territories, including Crimea.
Greene added that she considers the current situation out of control.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support Kyiv on this issue. For its part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of the Crimea «finally closed.»
Earlier, Russia sent a note to NATO countries because of arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any cargo that contains weapons for Ukraine will become a legitimate target for Russia. The Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation stated that the NATO countries are «playing with fire» by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that pumping Ukraine with weapons from the West does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect.
Lavrov stated that the US and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, «including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel … on the territory of Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and other countries.»
