
MEXICO CITY Feb 2 subway, sought compensation from a train driver who had an accident in early January in the amount of 260 million pesos (about $14 million), Universal newspaper reported.
«The collective transport system (STC) has requested 260 million pesos from the driver Carlos Alfredo N., who is on trial for murder and intentional injury,» the publication's website says.
Two trains collided on the third line of the Mexico City metro between La Raza and Potrero stations in the city center on January 7. A young woman died in the accident and 57 others were injured. One of the reasons for the collision of trains was previously called the excess of the safe speed by the driver, which is 35 km/h and allows in unforeseen situations to stop the train without risk to passengers.
With reference to the driver's lawyer, Universal reported that of the requested amount, only 120,000 pesos were provided for compensation to the victims and the family of the deceased. The remaining 259.88 million pesos are compensation for damage to the composition, tracks and engineering structures of the subway.
Four major accidents have occurred in the Mexico City metro in the past three years. The span of the metro bridge collapsed along with a passing train on May 3, 2021, killing 26 people and injuring 105. In a train collision at Takubaya station on March 10, 2020, one person died and 41 were injured. A fire at the central metro control station on January 9, 2021 caused the death of a person, 29 more were injured.
