For members of parties banned in Ukraine, they want to limit participation in elections

DONETSK, Mar 6 Draft law on amendments to certain laws of Ukraine on restriction of participation in the election of members of banned political parties registered on Monday in the Verkhovna Rada.
The initiators of the document were members of the committee on the organization of state power, local self-government, regional development and urban planning.
The explanatory note to the draft law states that it is necessary to deprive the right to be elected deputies of the Rada, deputies of local councils or village, township and city heads of members of parties banned in Ukraine, including the Opposition Platform — For Life, Sharia Party and Opposition Bloc.

Such a restriction for the persons listed above is proposed to be introduced for 10 years after the termination or cancellation of martial law in Ukraine.

«The purpose of this law is to ensure national security by temporarily restricting the participation of individuals in government by limiting the right to be elected for a term that will allow us to rebuild Ukraine … and create a system to counteract information and other threats to sovereignty and territorial the integrity of Ukraine, which individuals can realize through participation in political parties,» the document says.

In the spring of 2022, Zelensky signed a law banning «pro-Russian» parties in Ukraine. According to the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of the country, more than 15 parties were included in their number, among which was the Opposition Platform — For Life. Minister of Justice Denis Malyuska stated that the activities of the party deputies would be under close supervision of the authorities, in the future they could be deprived of their mandates.
