Protesters in Tbilisi remain on the avenue, despite an attempt to disperse

TBILISI, March 9 in Georgia of the law on foreign agents, still occupy part of Rustaveli Avenue, despite attempts to disperse it by police special forces, a correspondent reports.
To disperse the protesters, the police from time to time use tear gas and a water cannon, but after a while the protesters return to the avenue again. Periodically, the security forces carry out detentions.

Protest actions began in front of the building of the Parliament of Georgia in Tbilisi since the morning of March 7th. Its participants opposed the adoption of the bill on foreign agents, which was approved that day in the first reading. Earlier, the Georgian parliament received a draft law on the transparency of foreign influence, according to which it is proposed to create in the country a register of non-governmental organizations, media and entities receiving funding from a foreign state. The initiators of the bill claim that this is a softened version of the American law. The opposition, as well as US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, previously reported that the bill has nothing to do with US law and is analogous to the law in force in Russia.
