Is there metal in engine oil? Yes, if that metal is titanium! We will tell you how the combination of titanium and iron protects the engine. And at the end of the post, we will raffle smart watches among blog subscribers.
How it all began
Castrol is one of the oldest lubricant brands in the world. The company was founded in 1899 and initially produced lubricants for industrial plants and steam locomotives under the brand CC Wakefield & Co. In 1909, the company entered the market with motor oil made from castor oil (English — Castor Oil), which later gave the name to the brand. Three product lines were available: Castrol R for aircraft, Castrol C for cars and Castrol CW for boats.
Castrol is also involved in many key milestones in the history of the development of lubricants and the global automotive industry. For example, in 1914, the company began supplying oil to the Ford plant to produce the Ford-T, the first model to gain mass acceptance. In addition, Castrol has set 21 world speed records on land, water and air.
Castrol has always set trends and brought innovative products to the market. Here are some of the achievements that cannot be ignored:
— in 1935 the company produced the world's first oil with a patented package of anti-wear and antioxidant additives — Patent Castrol;
— in 1948 — created the world's first oil that maintains viscosity at sub-zero temperatures — Castrolite;
— in 1952, the world's first semi-synthetic racing motor oil R20 appeared, which was created jointly with Mercedes-Benz, and in 1974 the first fully synthetic Castrol Formula RS motor oil was introduced to the market; , which put an end to the division of oils into winter and summer;
— in 1976, the world's first biodegradable Castrol Biolube oil was introduced;
— in 1995, the fully synthetic Castrol Formula SLX oil was created, the first product on the market in the viscosity grade SAE 0W -30.
Castrol also develops lubricants for NASA, and these products are successfully tested in space. Castrol Braycote lubricants have been used in the Opportunity, Spirit and InSight rovers, the same ones that landed on Mars to explore the planet.

Castrol is technical partner of the Renault F1 Team racing in Formula 1
Talking about Castrol, you should definitely remember the cooperation with the leading Formula 1 teams: Renault, Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Williams, Team Lotus, Brabham, Walter Wolf Racing, Jaguar. In the 2019 season, the brand's lubricants are used in all leading racing series: such as Formula 1 by the Renault F1 Team, the World Rally Championship (WRC) by the Ford M-Sport and Skoda Motorsport teams, the DTM series by the Audi Sport team, as well as the Ford GT Team in the World Endurance Championship (WEC & WSCC).
Thus, Castrol's motorsport partnerships are not limited to car logos, but mean technical support for the teams and the supply of our lubricants for racing cars. It is in motorsport that the best oils for car engines are born.
The fact is that car engines are constantly evolving — they are becoming low-volume, highly accelerated, thermally loaded. In racing, all this is raised to an absolute degree, because both power and operating speed are much higher here than in civilian cars. Such loads place very high demands on the engine oil to reduce friction and protect the engine. And if today engine oil is being tested in a racing car or supercar, then tomorrow it can go into mass production at the factory. Motorsport is the best way to test oil in extreme conditions.
In addition to the world's leading motorsport teams, Castrol has partners in local markets, which is also true for Russia. This season, Castrol is a technical partner of the Moscow Classic Grand Prix festival and Championship and the Fresh Auto Drift Team, one of the leaders in the Russian Drift Series (RDS GP).

Titanium against friction
Castrol is synonymous with innovation in motor oils
Separately, I would like to dwell on the product itself, which implements all the latest developments, technologies and expertise of the company in the field of lubricants — the premium line of Castrol EDGE motor oils.
The Castrol EDGE engine oil line, which appeared on the market in 2006, is well known to the Russian consumer. It includes high-performance fully synthetic motor oils, which use Group III and IV base oils. Castrol EDGE products are designed for vehicles equipped with both classic naturally aspirated engines and highly accelerated ICEs with turbochargers, as well as direct fuel injection systems, three-way catalysts and particulate filters. The line oils are produced using the unique Fluid Titanium technology.
Even a novice car enthusiast will recognize Castrol EDGE by its golden canister at first sight
In technical terminology, Fluid Titanium technology is based on a copolymer compound of titanium and iron that forms bonds with hydrocarbon chains, which allows it to be incorporated into the oil. The enhanced oil film technology was originally introduced in 2011 under the name Fluid Strength Technology. In 2013, titanium appeared in the composition, and the technology was named Titanium FST, and in 2019, as a result of additional research and development, it was significantly upgraded and received a new name — Fluid Titanium.
Fluid Titanium has two tasks: the titanium copolymer dissolved in oil is a friction modifier and an anti-wear additive. Studies conducted at the Pangbourn UK Research Center on a multi-load friction machine have proven that Castrol EDGE oils with Fluid Titanium Technology provide up to 20% reduction in friction losses under certain operating and load conditions, compared to similar lubricants without Fluid Titanium technology.
However, the main properties of Castrol EDGE oils are revealed under friction conditions close to the boundary — when the rubbing parts of the engine begin to contact each other. These can be elements of the timing mechanism and CPG. Under such conditions, under the influence of high pressure and temperature, a tribochemical reaction occurs. The components of Fluid Titanium oils form a polymeric reaction layer at the point of contact, which is much stronger than aluminum or steel. It is he who protects the engine from wear, at least until the oil has exhausted its calculated resource. CPG, bearings
Radioisotope studies of Castrol EDGE engine oils with Fluid Titanium Technology conducted by independent engine testing institute ISP Salzbergen GmbH & Co. KG (Salzbergen, Germany), the independent engine testing institute APL Automobil-Prüftechnik Landau GmbH (Landau, Germany) and the Tribology Institute ITR (Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany) confirmed that oils with Fluid Titanium technology have improved anti-wear performance and increase engine operating hours for refusal. Compared to similar oils that do not contain such components in their composition, the difference in test time to engine failure was 246, 151 and 140 hours, respectively, which clearly confirms the advantages of Castrol EDGE series oils over analogues.
< b>Which Castrol EDGE oil to choose
The Castrol EDGE line consists of five main subgroups. To figure out which one is right for you, you must, first of all, remember the type of engine. The main thing you need to focus on is the approval or approval specified in the operating instructions for your car. It makes no sense to use a low-viscosity and low-ash oil for modern high-powered engines in an internal combustion engine developed 20 years ago for other lubricants. Under such conditions, no oil will provide sufficient protection against friction and the necessary cleaning of the engine. The Castrol EDGE line includes 14 fully synthetic oils in 0W-20, 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10W-60 viscosities. Among them are full-, medium- and low-ash oils, as well as products with energy-saving properties and even thickened oils. Each product of the line is an oil developed according to our unique recipe.

Where is Castrol made, which is sold in Russia
All original Castrol products for passenger cars presented in Russia are manufactured at European plants, namely: in Germany (factory code DE01), Belgium (BE02), Austria (AT01) and Italy (IT01). This ensures the highest level of quality. Oil is imported to the Russian market from all four factories, and the place of production of a particular product is indicated on the label of each canister or barrel.
The original four-liter Castrol EDGE canisters are easy to distinguish from a fake — on the top of the canister there is a hologram with a code that can be verified in several ways. For example, for free on our website. Be sure to check the information received from the system with the information actually indicated on the canister — the product name and batch number must match. You can read more about authentication here.
To protect yourself from buying a fake, we recommend buying Castrol products from our official partners. You can find them on our website in the special sections «Where to buy» and «Partners».
The slogan of the Castrol EDGE product line is “Live to the fullest!”. Our oils help unleash true engine power. After all, hidden opportunities are often revealed under pressure. Moreover, this rule applies not only to a car, but also to a human character.
