Lamborghini talks about the body of the new flagship supercar: Lego made of carbon

Lamborghini continues to prepare for the premiere of the successor to the Aventador model — a plug-in hybrid supercar with a factory index LB744: last week we were told about its very complex power plant, and today — about the features of the body structure.

We say Lamborghini — we mean carbon fiber, aka carbon: the Italian company from Sant'Agata Bolognese is considered one of the leading specialists in this material, its carbon fiber is also used by medical companies for prostheses of human limbs. As expected, Lamborghini has prepared a special carbon fiber cocktail for the new generation supercar and today dedicated a separate press release to it.

The carbon fiber monocoque is the basis of the bodywork of most modern supercars, but in the Lamborghini LB744 it is, let’s say, not quite “mono”. ”, the company itself calls the new design a monofuselage (monofuselage), which, to put it mildly, also does not quite accurately reflect reality.

The fact is that Lamborghini engineers decided to use two different types of carbon fiber in the body structure as flexibly as possible: the classic, made on the basis of woven carbon fabric, and the so-called forged, in which finely chopped pieces of this fabric are used instead of solid fabric. Forged carbon is less durable than classic, but it is very beautiful in appearance and is often used in decor; waste from the production of classic carbon is suitable for the production of forged carbon, that is, just trimmings and remnants of woven fabric. The energy costs of producing forged carbon are lower than those of classic carbon, and Western companies today are simply obliged to report on reduced energy consumption and waste-free production.

As a result, the cockpit of the Lamborghini LB744 turned out to be prefabricated: the lower part (bath) is made mainly of forged carbon fiber, the upper part (pillars and roof) is made of classic. The lower part, in turn, is also prefabricated, it consists of seven large sections, classic carbon is used in the most loaded areas. «/>

For the first time in a Lamborghini, the front subframe is completely carbon fiber, it is also composite and it also uses forged carbon instead of the classic where possible. The front subframe and monocoque, as well as the components of the subframe and monocoque, are bolted together without metal adapters-inserts, which made it possible to reduce weight and increase the overall strength of the structure. Lamborghini claims that the front carbon fiber subframe is 20% lighter than the aluminum one on the Aventador, and the overall body of the LB744 is 10% lighter, the torsional rigidity is immediately increased by 25% to 40,000 Nm/deg.

The rear subframe is still made of aluminum alloy, but the modular principle is also observed here, that is, this subframe is also assembled from elements with different characteristics and different technical processes: for example, the suspension mounting areas are cast and hollow inside. The fasteners are mostly bolted, the number of welds is radically reduced, which, on the one hand, further reduces energy costs, and on the other hand, improves the maintainability of an expensive supercar.

For a description of the power plant Lamborghini LB744 goes back to our previous post, here we only briefly recall that the LB744 is Lamborghini's first plug-in hybrid, its power plant consists of a new 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12, three electric motors (two in front, one in the rear), a unique 8-speed gearbox gears with two wet clutches, and a battery located in the central tunnel. The maximum total power of the power plant is 1015 hp. Even with the engine off, the Lamborghini LB744 remains all-wheel drive.
