ATHENS, Mar 16 The Greek National Intelligence Service EYP (NIS) has identified a «Russian spy» who used the data of a dead Greek woman,» the Athens news agency AMHA reported, citing an EYP statement.
According to her statement, this is a certain «Maria T.» who claimed to be Greek and worked as a photographer and owner of a craft store in Athens.
«The National Intelligence Service has been successful in importantly exposing the modus operandi and infiltration of foreign services into our country. In particular, the EYP investigation has proven that a certain «Maria T.», who in recent years claimed to be Greek and worked as a photographer and shop owner goods for needlework and knitting in Athens, with Greek citizenship and an identity card from 2018, is actually a foreigner named «Irina A.S.», who operated in our country under «deep cover», the report says.< br>
According to AMNA, the intelligence service discovered attempts by a third country to gain access to the data of deceased Greek citizens.
«This is an international practice of the special services of a particular country to create a special category of spies, nicknamed illegals (illegals). Illegals are recruited and trained by the services of a foreign country in order to deploy them in specific countries for espionage activities in favor of this country. They use «deep cover», which is created by falsifying individual documents and using certificates obtained on the basis of information about stillborn babies or deceased people. From the moment they are placed abroad, illegal immigrants live and behave according to a fabricated story created to protect their mission, «the agency said.
«Foreigner «Irina» lived and was recognized as a Greek «Maria», deceiving even those closest to her in Greece, who clearly did not know her real identity. Obviously, the action of «T.» is not limited to the territory of Greece, since as an EU citizen she can travel and work in several European countries,» the agency writes.
According to him, the «success of EYP» transcends national boundaries and concerns «all Western countries in general.»
The newspaper «Kathimerini» reported that, according to its data, «Maria T.» allegedly has been in Russia since January.
«While she was in Athens, she lived in the Pagrati area and ran a needlework shop in the same area. According to information, her husband, who is also allegedly a spy, was in Brazil until early 2023,» the newspaper writes.
In recent months, the National Intelligence Service has been at the center of the biggest scandal with wiretapping of thousands of Greek citizens — politicians, journalists, ministers, the leadership of the armed forces, entrepreneurs. Illegal spyware was also used for listening.
