A new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London showcases the work of over 100 artists. The exhibition, titled «Beyond the Streets of London», explores the influence of graffiti and street art around the world and captures the historical moments of this art movement.
Evan Prikko, co-curator of the exhibition Beyond the Streets London: «At the center of the exhibition is an unauthorized, the vandalistic and rebellious nature of the movement, but also the way it developed and influenced the way people do fashion, photography and music.»
Alexandre Farto, whose stage name is Vhils, is a Portuguese artist fascinated by faces. He uses recycled materials to recreate the walls. His work is the focus of a new exhibition at a London gallery.
Alexander Farto, 'Vhils', graffiti artist and graffiti writer: «The work I do always involves an act of destruction, from which I then create something. For example, the act of destroying the surface of walls in a public space or doors, or any object that the city doesn't care about. Through the process of uncovering, scratching the surface, I create stories — and usually about the people who are associated with these objects or the city.»
From faces to another kind of creative expression , Dutch artist Boris Tellegen, also known as Delta.
Boris Tellegen, «Delta», artist: «Graffiti is about your name. But it's also about the shape of letters, their formation, compression and stretching.»
After Los Angeles and New York, the exhibition presents new work here in London, a city steeped in street culture.
Laura Uccello, director of partnerships at the Saatchi Gallery: «About graffiti and There's a lot to be said for London's street culture, and the exhibition traces important moments such as New York rap tour to London and its links to the music scene and visual culture.»
Killa Kela, street culture archivist (rapper): «Among other things, you can trace here where graffiti originated and how far it has advanced through the whole world of marketing to new media. It's incredible.»
The exhibition «Beyond the Streets London» will run at the Saatchi Gallery until May 9.
