MOSCOW, 13 Mar. Scientists from the Belgorod State National Research University (NRU «BelSU») have discovered new genetic factors in the development of osteoarthritis of the knee joint in the population of the European part of Russia, the results of their work are published in the journal Life.
Osteoarthritis is a disease in which destruction occurs joint due to the degradation of cartilage, ligaments, muscles and other structures that form the joint.

According to the researchers, the interaction of just three genes determines the susceptibility to this disease.
«A key role in the formation of predisposition to this disease is played by specific variants of three genes that have not been previously studied in this context — rs6976 GLT8D1, rs56116847 SBNO1 and rs6499244 NFAT5. We have shown that the development of the disease is not influenced by the effects of individual genes, but by the interaction between them» , — explained Mikhail Churnosov, head of the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines of the National Research University «BelSU».
The results obtained, according to the authors, expand the understanding of the mechanisms of osteoarthritis development. These data can be used in the study of the genetic basis of the disease in its other localizations — in the hip joint, in the joints of the hand and foot, in various parts of the spine.

«In addition, our data can be used in the near future in the practice of orthopedic traumatologists to identify high-risk groups. By implementing preventive measures in this group, it is possible to significantly increase their effectiveness,” said Churnosov. span class=»share» data-nosnippet=»true» data-id=»1847633568″ data-url=»https://ria.ru/20230201/nauka-1847633568.html» data->
