MOSCOW, Mar 21 The number of DDoS attacks on banks and payment systems in the Russian Federation rose sharply in March, according to a study by cybersecurity firm StormWall.

According to experts, since From March 7 to March 20, the number of attacks on financial institutions increased by 126% compared to the same period last year and by 63% compared to the same period in February this year. According to preliminary information from experts, the attacks were organized by politically motivated hackers (hacktivists), who in March, after a long lull, rushed to attack Russian banks and payment systems with renewed vigor.
«The company's experts found that attacks on financial institutions had a relatively small power, but it was enough to disrupt the work of banks. The maximum duration of the attacks was 48 hours Experts believe that hacktivists independently launched attacks using ready-made botnets, as well as computers of their supporters, sending requests through public proxy servers,» the study notes.
According to the company, Russian banks suffered the most from DDoS attacks. «The websites and applications of banks were inaccessible, users could not log into their accounts and make transactions. Financial institutions were forced to inform customers about a technical failure,» StormWall noted.
