Stellantis and Dodge have unveiled the latest and greatest version of the Challenger muscle car designed for drag racing and yet certified for expensive general use. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is capable of a 0-60 mph time of 1.66 seconds (the world's best production road car) and a quarter mile time of 8.91 seconds thanks to a large number of technical improvements.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 was the final chord of the Last Call farewell series (translated into Russian as “last opportunity” or “last call”), dedicated to the imminent end of production of the iconic Charger and Challenger gasoline models. As part of this series, the Challenger Shakedown, Charger Super Bee, Challenger and Charger R/T Scat Pack Swinger, Charger King Daytona and Challenger Black Ghost debuted last August and September. The latest model of the Last Call series was scheduled to show in November at the SEMA tuning show in Las Vegas, but due to the complexity of the project and the notorious global shortage of components, the premiere did not take place until March 20.
1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5The Challenger SRT Demon 170 was conceived back in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when several dozen Dodge executives and key engineers gathered in a relatively safe parking lot to discuss future plans. During the brainstorming, the idea was born to make the most perfect and most amazing Challenger, and here it is in front of us. «170» is an evolution of the civilian drag version of the Challanger SRT Demon, introduced in 2017 and produced in an edition of 3300 copies, the number 170 refers to the factory index C170 of the Hellephant V8 engine and the strength of ethanol in units of proof (in our opinion — this is about 85 degrees) .

Under the hood of the Challenger SRT Demon 170, not a 7.0-liter Hellephant engine is installed, but a 6.2-liter V8 HEMI compressor modified according to a similar recipe: when running on E85 fuel (15% gasoline, 85% ethanol), it produces a maximum of 1039 hp. With. at 6500 rpm and 1281 Nm at 4200 rpm. When operating on E10 fuel (90% gasoline, 10% ethanol), the output is reduced to 912 hp. and 1098 Nm, but it's still more than the 2017 Demon had (852 hp and 1044 Nm). There is an indicator on the instrument panel showing the percentage of ethanol in the fuel, full output is available if the ethanol is more than 65%.

The developers claim that, in fact, only the block and camshaft remained from the original V8 HEMI, and all other components are new, and during their selection and testing, several engines simply collapsed — the work was literally in full swing! The engine in the Challenger SRT Demon 170 has a new drive supercharger with a volume increased from 2.7 to 3.0 liters (boost pressure increased by 40%), more efficient fuel injectors, new block heads, more heat-resistant valves, more durable bearings and studs, reinforced pistons and connecting rods, optimized for operation on candle alcohol and much more.

A reinforced 8-speed hydromechanical «automatic» is docked to the engine, all transmission components are also reinforced — cardan, axle shafts, bearings, differential. Suspension with adjustable Bilstein shock absorbers is optimized for drag racing (relatively “soft” springs and anti-roll bars are installed), lightweight Brembo brakes are installed in front. Wheels — aluminum or composite (aluminum hub, carbon fiber rim), tires — relatively high-profile Mickey Thompson ET Street dimensions 245/55 R 18 front and 315/50 R 17 rear.

The menu of the multimedia system has a lot of software and hardware settings to achieve the best results on the track. I remember the «first» Demon was banned from professional racing because he was too fast, but today all the problems of the NHRA (American National Hot Rod Association) are settled, and Dodge is ready to supply the Challenger SRT Demon 170 with all the necessary equipment for participation in professional drag -racing, including roll cage and braking parachute. Passport dynamic characteristics of the Challenger SRT Demon 170 were recorded just by NHRA: acceleration to 60 mph (96.56 km/h) takes 1.66 s, quarter mile (402 m) — 8.91 s, exit speed from the quarter miles — 243 km/h. G-loads on acceleration can reach 2,004g.

The minimum price for the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is $96,666 without shipping, it can be significantly increased due to options: you can, for example, instead of a standard cabin with a single upholstered driver's seat, choose a «full stuffing» with leather trim and a cool 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. To store the car, there is a branded fabric cover with Demon emblems painted on it, windows, lighting equipment and exhaust pipes.

Dodge plans to produce no more than 3300 copies of the Challenger SRT Demon 170 until December 31 of this year — 3000 copies are intended for the USA, 300 for Canada. The actual circulation may be less than 3300 pieces. due to bottlenecks in production. The Dodge brand does not intend to extend the release for the next year, this year the history of the gasoline Charger and Challenger will end, they will be replaced by a fully electric muscle car.
