The unhappy life of an emigrant: the tragic fate of Savely Kramarov

MOSCOW, Mar 20, Pavel Surkov. In 1981, shocking news spread around the world of Soviet cinema: the famous actor Savely Kramarov emigrated to Israel.
For the first time, such a famous artist left the country — in fact, that is why Kramarov, who starred in almost fifty films, was refused to be released abroad. This meant that the pictures with his participation had to be put «on the shelf», which would deprive the viewer of a meeting with many of his favorite films.

Many people knew about Kramarov's complex character: for example, he refused to film on Saturday, observing the Sabbath rule, did yoga, and sometimes on the set he could be harshly categorical.

The roles of the artist began to be given less and less, and it was then that Kramarova was visited by the thought of emigration. Moreover, his uncle lived in Israel — the only surviving native person.

However, having stumbled upon the refusal of official bodies, Kramarov decided on a desperate step: together with director Alexander Levenbuk, he wrote an open letter to Ronald Reagan, a former colleague from the film industry, who was recently elected US President. The letter «from actor to actor» was read on the air of an American radio station, and this decision finally determined Kramarov's fate. » data-crop-ratio=»0.790428406020841″ data-crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»474″ data-source-sid=»cc_0″ class=»lazyload» width=»1920″ height=» 1518″ decoding=»async» />

Some of his films really disappeared from cinemas and TV screens: they stopped showing the musical fairy tale «Mama», from «Mimino» they cut out an episode with the appearance of the hero Kramarov at the courthouse (but then they returned it anyway) and even the famous «Gentlemen of Fortune» on some time was removed from the New Year's TV program.

He flew to Vienna: there was no direct communication between the USSR and Israel. But Kramarov did not reach the Promised Land: he went on tour in Europe and America. Actually, it was the United States that became his second home. He settled in Los Angeles, next to an old friend — actor Ilya Baskin, with whom he starred in «Big Break», and counted on the fact that right now he would start a wave of proposals from leading directors and producers.
< br />Kramarov's first big role in the United States was the role of a KGB agent in the film Moscow on the Hudson. The artist was noticed by American producers, he was praised by the famous comedian Robin Williams.

But in order to make a truly significant career in Hollywood, knowledge of the language was required, and Kramarov did not speak English perfectly. And he was offered the appropriate roles — for example, the Russian cosmonaut in the science fiction film «2010: the year of making contact», the continuation of the famous «Space Odyssey». he refused — they say, they are brave and courageous people, and he will not allow making a caricature out of the role.

Kramarov's behavior instantly became known in the production world, and the number of invitations to the cinema began to decline. Nevertheless, Kramarov tirelessly continued to pursue his own career: he joined the Screen Actors Guild (which was a great success for an emigrant), got his own agent, and even managed to buy a small house with fees. But one could only dream of the former glory that he knew in the USSR.

When Kramarov returned to his homeland in 1992 to take part in the Kinotavr festival, this glory fell with new force on him: fans dreamed of getting an autograph from the artist or taking a picture with him. And Kramarov returns to the domestic cinema — starred in the films «Nastya» and «Russian Business».

Kramarov continued to lead a healthy lifestyle: he did not eat meat, went in for sports, swam, did not drink alcohol and was engaged in curative starvation. But for some reason, the actor was most afraid of the possibility of getting cancer — and it was this insidious disease that lay in wait for him.
but in dramatic roles, and this will open a new page in his career.
But life turned out to be much more dramatic — an insidious illness led to complications, and then to a stroke, the artist could not cope with the consequences. Savely Kramarov died in 1995, he was only 60 years old.
