MOSCOW, March 22 The United States and Great Britain recorded record trade deficits in 2022 — 1.18 trillion and 290.4 billion dollars, becoming leaders in this indicator among large economies, follows from the analysis of data from national statistical services.
At the end of 2022, the United States increased its trade deficit by 9.9 percent, to its highest ever record of $1.18 trillion. Last year's record highs were also recorded by the UK, whose trade deficit rose by a third to $290.4 billion, and India, which increased its trade deficit by half last year to $268.3 billion.
France, whose trade deficit increased by 1.8 times over the year to $ 171.7 billion, ranked fourth among major economies , and Japan, whose negative trade balance grew by almost 10 times — up to 150.5 billion dollars, rounded out the top five.
The top 10 economies with the highest value of imported goods over exports also include Turkey ($109.5 billion), Spain ($71.5 billion), Philippines ($58.2 billion), Hong Kong ($49.8 billion) and Bangladesh ($48.1 billion).
The absolute leader in the growth of the trade deficit was Poland, where the figure jumped 52.5 times — up to $21 billion. At the same time, it more than doubled in Turkey, Spain, Mexico, New Zealand and Finland.
In addition, six economies that recorded a trade surplus in 2021 moved into negative territory last year: South Korea, Italy, Thailand, Hungary, Chile, Slovakia and Sweden.
As a result, 35 major economies in the world recorded a trade deficit in 2022 for a total of $2.9 trillion compared to 29 economies with $2.1 trillion a year earlier.
The study was conducted on the basis of data from the national statistical services of the 60 largest economies in the world. The final sample for publication included economies that, as of mid-March, disclosed data for January-December last year and recorded a negative trade balance in this period. Data are presented in US dollars. If the statistical service provides information only in national currency, monthly or annual data were recalculated at the average exchange rate for the period.
