MOSCOW, 25 Mar. Archaeologists have found statues of several pharaohs during excavations at the Matariyya Temple of the Sun in Heliopolis. Including a sculpture of the powerful ruler of ancient Egypt, Ramses II (1279-1213 BC), writes MailOnline.
The temple was founded by Ramesses II, so it is not surprising that his pedestal is in the sanctuary, the publication notes.
Other statues depict Ramesses IX (1126-1108 BC), Horemheb (1323-1295 BC) and Psammetichus II (595-589 BC). Scientists have also found a sculpture of a pharaoh, whose identity has yet to be identified. According to preliminary estimates, the age of this statue is about four thousand years.
The temples of the Sun were built in 1550-1070 BC. They were dedicated to the god Ra. The pharaohs were considered his earthly incarnation and were responsible for the maintenance of the sanctuaries.
Sculptures of gods and goddesses were installed in the temples of the Sun. They believed that these statues are vessels of supernatural power. There were also pedestals of the pharaohs. MailOnline writes that they were ordered by the royals themselves.
