Elderly people with hypertension are more than 2.44 times more likely to experience epilepsy than their peers with normal pressure. At the same time, diabetes, smoking and other factors do not have such an effect. This is stated in a study by scientists from the Boston University School of Medicine.
Epilepsy manifests itself not only in childhood, medical practice shows that in almost a third of patients the disease is observed in old age. At the same time, it ranks third in prevalence among age-related patients after strokes and diseases associated with dementia.
The scientists themselves clarify that there is no data yet on exactly how hypertension is associated with the development of epilepsy in old age. However, they observe a correlation and advise patients with high blood pressure to pay attention to the risks.
