CHISINAU, Apr 3 German Chancellor Olaf Scholz meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that Russia, in his opinion, is trying to destabilize the situation in Moldova — despite numerous statements by the Russian Foreign Ministry that the allegations of a «Russian plan to destabilize the situation in Moldova» are unfounded and unsubstantiated.
In Bucharest on Monday Scholz met with Romanian President Klaus Johannes and Sandu. «We read with great concern the reports of Russia's attempts to destabilize the situation in Moldova… We support Moldova with everything we can to protect it from these destabilization attempts by Russia,» Scholz said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry previously stated that Moscow resolutely rejects insinuations about Russia's alleged attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of Moldova and undermine the situation in this country, and also calls on Chisinau not to succumb to provocations and be guided by the interests of citizens. At the same time, the Moldovan opposition accused Sandu of trying to usurp power in the country.
At a meeting in Bucharest, Scholz stressed that efforts must be made to help Moldova fight these attempts. Sandu noted that the Chisinau authorities are coping with the situation and ensuring the security of Moldova, but the republic needs the support of partners.
«We need support to fight propaganda and disinformation more effectively. We need help to strengthen the institutions that should maintain stability,» Sandu added.
Earlier, the President of Moldova said that attempts were being prepared in the republic to change the constitutional order, she called on the parliament to tighten security legislation.
