MOSCOW, April 4 Leonardo DiCaprio appeared in court as a witness in a fraud case, reports The Guardian.
Businessman Joe Low is accused of running an international money laundering scheme. As a result of his actions, billions are allegedly stolen from the Malaysian investment fund 1MDB. His partner is rapper Pras Michel. According to accusers, the musician became an intermediary for Lowe's stolen millions and his attempts to influence the US government.
«Prosecution alleges that between June and November 2012, Lowe ordered more than $21.6 million in transfers from foreign entities to Michel in order to transfer money for the 2012 presidential election,» the publication says.
DiCaprio ended up in court because Lowe was a sponsor of the actor's charitable foundation and financed The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), where Leo has the main role. The artist thanked him when he received the Golden Globe for his work in the film.
CNN reports that DiCaprio stopped talking to Lowe in 2015. Then the actor's representatives found an article claiming that Lowe acted illegally.
According to DiCaprio's spokesman, the actor is working with the US Attorney's Office to recover funds received from 1MDB.
