MOSCOW, Apr 11 The EU believes that the President's comment France Emmanuel Macron that Europe should not be drawn into the conflict over Taiwan will harm both the European countries themselves and relations between Ukraine and the United States, the Financial Times newspaper writes, citing two high-ranking diplomats.
Earlier, after a visit to China, Macron said that Europe should not be drawn into the confrontation between the US and China over Taiwan and adapt to the «American rhythm.» According to him, the Europeans need to «wake up» and think about their interests.
According to two high-ranking EU diplomats, «Macron's comments will harm both Europe and Ukraine's relations with the United States, as well as make it difficult to develop a common EU position towards Beijing.»
«This is not a victory for anyone. Except (President of the People's Republic of China — ed.) Xi (Jinping),» one of the diplomats quoted the publication as saying.
Earlier, Florida Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio commented on Macron's words, threatening to leave Europe to deal with Ukraine on its own and focus on the Taiwan issue.
The situation around Taiwan escalated significantly after a visit to the island in early August last year by then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. China, which considers the island one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi's visit, seeing in this move US support for Taiwanese separatism, and held large-scale military exercises.
