Paintings by cosmonaut Alexei Leonov were presented in the Tretyakov Gallery

MOSCOW, Apr 12. On the Day of Cosmonautics, the permanent exhibition of the New Tretyakov Gallery in Hall 36 presented works by Alexei Leonov, the press service of the institution reports.
Visitors will see two paintings — «Voskhod-2» and «Aurora Borealis». The cosmonaut donated them to the museum in 2017.
Leonov is the first person to perform a spacewalk. On March 18, 1965, he and Pavel Belyaev launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Voskhod-2 spacecraft.
“Even before starting his career as a military pilot, Leonov was passionate about painting, he even had intentions to enter the Riga Academy of Arts,” the gallery says.
But because of the difficult financial situation of his family, the dream had to be abandoned. Nevertheless, in the cosmonaut corps, he continued to draw.

Together with the artist Andrei Sokolov, the pilot created several works about space exploration. The works were lithographed into postage stamps.

«Leonov can rightly be considered the creator of a new genre of «space» painting,» the press service said.
The paintings will be on display until April 23, 2023.
Earlier it was reported about the opening of the exhibition «In the Language of Rules and Exceptions. Science and Art» at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center.
