The Nalchik City Court of Kabardino-Balkaria ruled to pay Nartkala resident Evgenia Zakharchenko 1 million rubles in moral damages for the death of her 85-year-old husband Nikolai Zakharchenko, who hanged himself after a criminal case was opened against him for manufacturing drugs. In August 2020, 12 police officers came to the house of Nikolai and Evgenia. In the barn they found a basin with a dried hemp bush. According to Zakharchenko's wife, the bush just grew on their site. “Before that, I didn’t know at all what kind of drugs they were, the green color means you can cut off the leaves and give them to the rabbits!” the pensioner said.
Nikolay Zakharchenko was taken to the police department, where he was charged with the manufacture of drugs on a large scale (Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code). On the evening of the same day, he returned home, and on the night of August 18 he committed suicide, writing a suicide note stating his innocence.
The Department of the Investigative Committee for Kabardino-Balkaria conducted a pre-trial check, which suicide «due to criminal prosecution by police officers who discovered wild cannabis on his property.»
In September 2020, the Ministry of Internal Affairs dropped the case against Zakhorchenko due to “insignificance”.
