Chinese court upholds death sentence for American Mark Svidan
In China, an appeals court upheld the death sentence for U.S. citizen Mark Swidan, giving him a two-year reprieve, according to a statement released on the U.S. State Department website .
As noted, today the Intermediate Court in Jiangmen City of China decided to reject the appeal of «illegally detained US citizen Mark Svidan», upholding the death penalty and postponing the execution of the sentence for two years. The State Department expressed its disappointment with this verdict and its intention to continue pressing for his immediate release and return to the United States.
The State Department noted that US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken are personally involved in Svidan's release.
According to The Hill, Svidan has been imprisoned in China for over 10 years on drug-related charges, the man was sentenced to death in 2018.
