CAIRO, Apr 14 Qatar considers messages to be speculation about the restoration of Syria's membership in the League of Arab States (LAS), said Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abderrahman Al Thani.
«Qatar has a clear position. There were reasons for suspending Syria's membership in the Arab League … For us, these reasons still exist,» he said in an interview with Qatari television.
Prime Minister of Qatar expressed the opinion that the Syrian crisis should be resolved by political means. According to him, media reports about the return of Syria to the Arab League are «speculation.»
Earlier, the media reported on the plans of the Arab League countries to consider the return of Syria to this organization. On Tuesday, the Saudi Al-Hadas TV channel reported that on Friday, the Saudi city of Jeddah would host a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan, which would be devoted to the return of Syria to the ranks of the Arab League.
Syria's membership in this organization was frozen in November 2011 after the outbreak of armed conflict in the country. A number of Arab countries have recalled their ambassadors from Damascus. The Syrian leadership then stated that it did not accept the decision of the Arab ministers to suspend participation in the work of the pan-Arab organization, considering it illegal. At the same time, the Arab League did not actually take part in the negotiations on a settlement in Syria, despite the fact that we are talking about a key country in the Arab world.
