On the day of his 90th birthday, the scientist thought about future generations of researchers
The outstanding Russian academician Yuri Oganesyan, who has not yet received the well-deserved Nobel Prize, established his own, by analogy with the famous Nobel Prize. He opened a bank account and deposited 20 million rubles into it, which will become the basis of the new Oganesson scientific prize, repeating the name of one of the elements he discovered.

Recall that the Russian Academy of Sciences has been nominating Academician Oganesyan for the Nobel Prize for many years. Under his leadership, the 104th, 105th and 106th elements of the periodic table were synthesized at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, as well as new elements — from 113th to 118th. The last, 118th element was named after Yuri Tsolakovich – oganesson (Og). Thus, oganesson became the second (after seaborgium) element named after a living person. To date, it is the heaviest and last chemical element of the Periodic Table.
Until waiting for a high scientific award, Yuri Oganesyan rose above the same Nobel committee that establishes the Nobel Prize, sometimes guided not by the scientific merits of candidates, but by political conjuncture. He approved a personal award based on his own bonus of 20 million rubles.
According to Scientific Russia, the established award was announced on Friday during a festive event in honor of the 90th anniversary of the scientist, JINR Director Academician Grigory Trubnikov.
He explained that the Oganesson Prize will be awarded for significant achievements in theoretical and experimental research in the field of physics, chemistry, biology, applied problems, as well as for creative activity in the field of education, propaganda and popularization of sciences.
According to Grigory Trubnikov, in the summer or autumn, the first competition for the Oganesson Prize may be announced.
